Prince William County, Virginia lies just 35 miles south of the nation’s capital Washington, D.C. Named for Prince William Augustus, English Duke of Cumberland, the county was first settled by English immigrants in 1653, before being officially founded in 1731. Prince William County would become the site of the first major land battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Manassas, during which the towns and residents suffered significant losses.
In the News: A former sailor recently filed a lawsuit in Prince William County against a gym where he joined a CrossFit workout regimen. The plaintiff claims the gym owners and a former trainer oversaw a workout at the gym that caused the sailor to suffer from rhabdomyolysis—a condition that causes small shreds of muscular fiber to be absorbed through the bloodstream, ultimately poisoning the kidneys. The former sailor performed the workouts under the trainer’s direction, causing him permanent disability. A jury in the case awarded the sailor $300,000 in damages.
