One of the forty fastest growing counties in the country, DeSoto County is named after famed explorer Hernando DeSoto. He died in DeSoto County while exploring the Mississippi and its Delta, and was the first European explorer to make contact with Native Americans in the area. DeSoto County is rapidly growing thanks to its proximity to Memphis, Tennessee, and its new casino complex.

In the News: The ACLU recently sued DeSoto County after police officers choked and assaulted a 13-year-old girl. During a school bus ride home, the 13-year-old girl and a 17-year-old girl got into an altercation. The bus driver stopped the bus and called the police. When they arrived, video cameras on the bus caught the police choking the 13-year-old girl and throwing her into her bus seat, as well as telling her that she “wouldn’t think this was funny once she got a bullet between her eyes.” The case is currently ongoing in Federal Court.
